I make photographs in order to connect – to myself, to others, the environment and above all to spirit. Wherever I direct the camera, it is the hidden, mysterious, and nonphysical—the essence of the thing—that intrigues me. From a hiding place deep inside, its energy pulls at me and demands to be made manifest. In black and white, or color.
I have learned to work intuitively whether in nature, the studio, or the darkroom, paying close attention to what catches my eye, or whispers to me. You, the observer, may see and feel what that was, or perhaps, something entirely different. Either response gratifies me.
And, as much as I love making exposures alone out in the world, I love even more the collaboration that comes from co-creating portraits. In sessions, I work to create a space in which everyone feels comfortable enough to reveal the various realities of who they are. The results speak for themselves.
I’ve exhibited my work in galleries both in San Diego as well as Santa Fe. Twenty-six portraits from my book, BURNERS, were featured in the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery exhibition, No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man, 2018-2019, which went on to shows at the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Oakland Museum of Art.
My studio is in Santa Fe, NM.
